Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati records, 1755-

Records of the Mass. Society of the Cincinnati, a state branch of the all-male Revolutionary War veterans' organization founded in 1783 to continue friendships developed among the officers during wartime. Loose and bound records include: minutes (1783-1900); financial records (1765-1982); correspondence (1780-1953); printed materials (1783-1953) which include publications of both the general society and other state chapters; and member records. Correspondence contains circulars to and from other state societies, applications for memberships, requests for financial support, and genealogical information. (Cont'd) The collection also includes personal papers left to the Society. The papers of Henry Lyman Patten (1862-67) document his Civil War career as a member of the 20th Regiment of the Mass. Volunteer Infantry and the bulk of the Francis S. Drake papers (1873-90) consist of materials gathered for publication of member biographies. Papers attributed to Joseph P. Warren (1894-1905) comprise historical notes used for lectures and publications; and the Edward B. Robbins papers (1896-97) include various maps pertaining to the Civil War.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
